Animal Symbolism

The students and the teacher discuss animal symbolism in the West and in Chinese culture and compare those symbols with their own culture.  I did this activity in Taiwan and the students learned a lot about Western symbolism but already knew all about the Chinese symbols.  I did the same activity in Korea and found out that Koreans know more about the Western symbols than the Taiwanese but not as much as a Western person.  The Koreans also knew more about Chinese symbols than a Western person but not as much as a Taiwanese students.

Cross Cultural Dating

I think figuring culture is a process rather than just memorizing cultural facts that are soon obsolete.  This worksheet is a good set of questions you can ask when trying to figure out dating in a new country.  The teacher can compare and contrast his country with the customs of the host country.  I would use this at the college level and not at the secondary level.  Keep in mind this topic is taboo in some cultures.

Figuring Out Cross Cultural Dining Etiquette

Again, this is a worksheet designed to help the student learn how to figure out cultures by asking the right questions.    I did this activity in both Taiwan and Korea.  I knew a lot of the Chinese stuff from books but learned a great deal from my students in Korea.

Internet Addiction Test

I have taught in East Asia for ten years and East Asia is wired!  Internet addiction is a topic that East Asian students are very interested in and many students wonder if they are internet addicts.  I point out that the validity and reliability of this test is limited and the test should get them thinking about their internet habits rather than being seen as a definitive diagnosis.
